The palace was built by rebuilding the baroque style of an ordinary residence for King Jan III Sobieski and Maria Kazimiera in 1681-1696, according to a design by Augustyn Locci. It contains carvings depicting King Jan III Sobieski, the winner of Chocim and Vienna, as a brave commander and brave warrior, and paintings showing the virtues and beauty of his wife Maria Kazimiera. It houses the Palace Museum in Wilanów. In 1994 the palace complex in Wilanów Królewski together with Morysin was declared a historical monument. The palace together with the surrounding park and buildings have remained unchanged architectural form, historical and artistic values despite partitions, wars and occupation.
