The Old Orangery, called the Great Orangery in the time of Stanisław August, was built in the years 1786-1788 according to the design of the royal architect Dominik Merlini. The building was located in the western part of the garden, in a bend of a withdrawn escarpment. The building founded on a rectangular horseshoe plan is characterized by classicistic simplicity. The main section with the southern facade, divided by seventeen large arcaded windows and pilasters between them, is the proper Orangery, intended for storing exotic trees and shrubs, displayed in summer for garden decorations. Two wings adhere to this elongated block from the north; in the west there were guest rooms and gardeners, coach houses and rooms for gardening equipment, while in the eastern, much wider, a court theater was located, the entrance to which is located in the eastern, two-story facade. The top of this facade, formerly visible from the windows of the palace in Ujazdów, in addition to the authentic arcaded window, was decorated on both sides with pairs of painted windows, discovered several years ago under plaster and reconstructed. The conservatory room was heated in winter with furnaces, to which the hearths were located in the corridor connecting both wings. In front of the southern facade of the building there is a rectangular, separated by a thick wall fence, two-level terrace, with a narrow part directly at the building and the lower with a garden with a geometric arrangement. At the entrance to it on both sides lie stone lions, and on the corners of the walls there are two large stone vases of the crater type imitating antique. This garden, in the center of which is a circular fountain pool, is decorated with a significant number of stone sculptures, made in a royal sculpture workshop and forming a kind of museum in the open air, which is a reference to the concept of Stanisław August. Among them are eight busts of Roman Caesars, made on the basis of antique designs by Franciszek Pinck (once they were used to decorate furnaces heating today non-existent column galleries of the Palace on the Island). In addition, two sculptures personifying the Vistula and Bug by Tomasso Righi, which originally decorated the terrace of the Palace on the Island, were set up here. The collection of sculptures is complemented by two marble sphinxes and eight vases made of this stone. In the Old Orangery building they found their place: a collection of plaster casts masterpieces of ancient sculpture (collected mainly by King Stanisław August for teaching purposes) and modern sculpture, exhibited in the theater foyer and in the Winter Garden, and the Gallery of Polish Sculpture, located in the ground floor and first floor rooms of the west wing .
