The Mermaid Monument on the Vistula was erected in 1939. It is the last monument in Warsaw that was erected before World War II. Its author is Ludwika Nitschowa. The monument is located on the Vistula next to the Świętokrzyski Bridge, set up parallel to the river current. Made of bronze, it measures 4.5 m together with a plinth. The mermaid stands on a sandstone pedestal surrounded by fountains. Her right hand with the sword is raised and her left hand is holding the shield against her chest. On the shield there is an eagle wearing a crown and the inscription "Warsaw".
