Address: ul. Mickiewicza 99 , 05-100 Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki

The location of Modlin, at the confluence of the Vistula, Narew and Wkra rivers, gave this place outstanding defensive qualities, which was noticed by Napoleon himself who, after the creation of the Duchy of Warsaw, ordered the construction of a fortress here in 1806. The significance of this place was also previously appreciated by the Swedish king Karol Gustaw, establishing a fortified camp here called "Bugskansen", which survived until 1660. It is the largest comparable only to the French Verdun fortress of the world. Its oldest part - the citadel with barracks is up to 2250 meters long, making it one of the longest buildings in the world. The fortress became famous among others from the heroic struggle during the September 1939 campaign. From September 11, for 18 days, the soldiers fought alone, setting an example of great bravery. She surrendered, mainly due to depletion of ammunition, medicine and food. Over 2,000 Polish soldiers lost their lives defending Modlin. Currently in the fortress you can admire, among others citadel, Ostrołęka Gate and observation deck on the Tatar Tower.
