The museum founded in 1961 as the Museum of the History of the Workers' Movement Żyrardowa, housed in a former representative villa of Karol Dittrich. By the decision of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, the Museum of West Mazovia in Żyrardów was entered into the State Register of Museums. Due to changes in the scope of activity of the Museum of Western Mazovia, it became a coordinator of the integration of museums from the entire western Mazovia. The beginning of these activities was the exhibition '' From the history of the cities of West Mazovia '' organized in 2002. The collections of the West Mazovia Museum in Żyrardów are divided into four main categories, departments: art, ethnography, history and iconography. Currently, the Museum of West Mazovia has over 8400 exhibits in its collections.
