Address: ul. Zamkowa 1 , 06-400 Ciechanów

Built on swampy terrain in the fourteenth century by the Mazovian prince Siemowit III. The Ciechanów castle was practically impregnable and was never occupied by enemies, although such attempts were made by the Teutonic Knights. The greatest period of the castle's splendor was the reign of Prince Janusz I, son of Siemowit, who after the defeat of the Teutonic Knights at Grunwald in 1410 rebuilt the Ciechanów castle into his residence. During the reign of the next princes, it was an important point in the administration of the Duchy of Ciechanów, a place of international negotiations and a fortress in which the prince's treasury was kept. After the death of the last Mazovian prince, Janusz II, he was offered as a dowry for Queen Bona (wife of Sigismund the Old). It suffered the most damage during the Swedish invasion and was burned along with the city. The ruins of the castle in the nineteenth century attracted painters, writers and poets, who left us very interesting descriptions and drawings of the castle. In the 1960s, the process of rebuilding the castle began, which eventually became a museum object, a "permanent ruin", with a small museum exposure on the towers and in the reconstructed castle basement, the so-called "Gothic hall." In 2005, the Mazovian Nobility Museum in Ciechanów, the tenant of the building, announced a competition for the revitalization of the castle. Archaeological research conducted in the years 2007 - 2008 brought excellent results, it turned out that in the lowest layers under the castle courtyard wooden and stone-brick structures from the end of the 13th century were exposed. The massive, brick fortress has the shape of a regular quadrangle with two huge towers (west, called the arsenal and eastern, called the prison) from the side of the river. There is an interesting legend of the castle, talking about the doggy spirit. If you go on a night walk to the Ciechanów castle, you have the chance to meet the ghost of a black large dog. Apparently it is the spirit of knight Sulimir, punished with the character of the black brit for vicious life. The legend says that it can be conjured up. It's enough to have the courage to stroke the dog. You also have to be a righteous man, selflessly helping other people. As a reward, the daredevil will get treasures hidden in the castle underground.
